Are you 18 or over? Yes, I'm 34.

Canon: Lord of the Rings

Character: Arwen

Timeline: Arwen is entering game at the time of the Dawnless Day (March 10, 3019).

Personality:

Arwen, unlike the way she is portrayed in the movies, is greatly protected and pampered by her father, her brothers, and the population of Rivendell. As Lord Elrond's youngest child and only daughter, she is doted on and kept from as much danger as possible. She would, under no circumstances, be allowed out of the borders of Rivendell in order to confront Nazgûl. This is done by Glorfindel - a powerful Elven warrior - in the book, and makes a whole lot more sense.

This said, Arwen is also not a weak damsel-in-distress. Like her father, her greatest strength lies not in fighting but in the power of her mind and the depth of her wisdom. She has spent a great deal of time studying lore with her father, and with her grandmother, the Lady Galadriel. She knows all the tales of Aman, and of the three Ages of Middle Earth, and has been taught again and again the importance of her place in it.

Arwen is also defined by the strength of her love. She is not a clingy, weak thing who has no purpose outside of her love for Aragorn, but it is this love that helps to show how strong she truly is. Her love overcomes even her own fear of death, and the sadness and grief that will eventually be hers. It is through her love that she comes to truly understand herself, and to make the crucial decisions that not only drastically affect her own life but the future of Gondor and Middle Earth. While her place in canon is a traditionally feminine one, her strength, dedication (and even sacrifice) cannot be understated.

Arwen is gentle and soft-spoken, but not without her own bite. Her personality has many layers, and beneath the well-mannered Elvish princess is a will of iron and a lively and inquisitive mind. She sees everything that happens around her, although she often does not comment, and her brothers have often seen the sharper side of her tongue. Curious, and in love with the world around her (like all of the Eldar are) she spent many years of her youth full of questions addressed to her father, her grandmother, her brothers, and anyone who would listen. She is the daughter of Lord Elrond, and has inherited his wisdom.

As goes with her rather academic and scholarly mind, she is often quiet and pensive. She spends a lot of time in quiet reflection, and is not incredibly social. This is not to say that she is rude, or anti-social. She enjoys being around others and greatly enjoys the evenings in the Hall of Fire, listening to the songs and poetry. But she also is more introverted than not, and needs her time to herself to absorb and process the things she has seen and learned throughout the day. She also does not open up easily - she would rather listen than talk. There are few people who truly know her - her father, her brothers, and Aragorn being most of them.

While not haughty and unapproachable, Arwen is also very aware of her position and is used to being treated in a way that befits it. She is a princess of the Eldar, and potentially one day the Queen of Gondor, and has her entire life been treated with respect and condescension. She is not used to being addressed in an overly familiar manner, nor would she know how to respond if she were. It is not that she demands it, rather that she expects it, and has known nothing else.

Arwen has a very stubborn streak. While not outspoken about it, she holds fast to what she believes and the choices she has made. It is very difficult to get her to change her mind. She often will listen with great interest and kindness to opposing views only to cast them aside immediately after the person has left. She is not much for arguing, but she will not relent once she has made a decision.

Arwen, in her soft and quiet way, is deeply kind. She cares very much about others, even if she does not interact with them comfortably, and cares very much about the world around her. The widening Shadow that threatens even the peace of Imladris fills her with deep sadness - and not only because those she loves are put deeply in danger. She is also saddened by the idea of the loss that will come from the coming war, and the destruction of so many lives and so many places. One of the Eldar at heart, she grieves for the changing of the world, and the fading of her people.

At the time Arwen enters the game, she is full of sadness and fear. It has been some time since she has heard of Aragorn's safety, and the Shadow has reached far enough to completely Darken the East, something she can see even from the protected valley of Rivendell. Yet she remains steadfast, and finds hope even in these dark times, a hope that is tied with her love, and in embracing estel, most easily translated as "faith."

Background: Here and Here!

Abilities/Additional Notes:

*Arwen is of the peredhel - the half-elven, and as such she has the choice whether to be counted among the Eldar, or among the race of Men. It was a choice given first to her grandfather Eärendil, and henceforth to all of his descendants. At the point she enters game, she's made her decision to be counted among the race of Men, so that she may marry Aragorn.

*Arwen is also 2778 years old, and as such has wisdom beyond her appearance, simply because of how long she has lived.

*Her senses - hearing, vision, sensitivity to the world around her - is heightened because of her elven ancestry, but that is fading slowly since she has made her choice to join the race of men.

[Arwen appears on screen, looking a bit confused and trying to adjust the device to center her picture. She bites her tongue in determination, and a bright smile erupts, reaching her eyes, when she gets it the way she wants it. She's never seen a device like this before, but at least she's proven to herself that she's smart enough to figure it out]

Mae govannen. Mi van me? Or, perhaps, Elvish is not spoken here? Please, where are we? If I have been kidnapped, I beg you, I must return home at once. My home and my love lie in the balance, and I would not be so sundered from them.

Third-Person Sample:

It was full day, but even from the protected valley of Imladris, Arwen could tell that things were not as they should be. Facing east, she could see the darkness reaching towards them; the night crawling unnaturally from the east instead of the west, and full of evil tidings. Closer to Mordor, it must feel like night - the sun was likely completely blotted out by the evil of the Dark Lord.

And somewhere, in the midst of it, was Aragorn and the rest of the Fellowship.

She worried for her love - of course she did. But not just for him. For if Frodo failed, or if any of them failed, the world would collapse around them, and all that they had ever done would be for naught, swallowed by the Shadow and evil of Mordor. Once before, things had looked this dire - more so, perhaps. When her father had been but a young boy, Morgoth's grip on the land had seemed nearly absolute. And in that age, her grandfather, Eärendil the Mariner, had sacrificed himself to endless solitude sailing the heavens in order to bring peace to the world. Always, there was sacrifice.

She almost feared to hope that things could turn out the way she wished - and whatever happened, it was bittersweet. If the ring was destroyed, the ring of her father would likely no longer protect Imladris, and the Last Homely House would fade. The world as she knew it was at an end, whether this quest ended for good or ill. But if they succeeded, if Aragorn regained the crown of Gondor, at least they could be happy, for a little while, until death once again sundered them.

A tear streamed down her cheek, and she let it fall. The time of the Elves in Middle Earth was drawing to a close, and as much as that pained her, she could hope only that the time of Men would follow it, and not a time of Darkness.
